The small town is of ancient origin and is situated on the road leading from Castellina in Chianti to Siena in an area where it was probably
an Etruscan-Roman settlement. The Noblemen of Staggio possessed all this territory but later they gave it to the Vallombrosian monks of the Badia a Passignano.
The medieval fortress was almost entirely destroyed and new buildings were built on the old structure. Inside the village, near the parish
of S. Martine we can see an old farm and the Villa Mazzei, dating from XII century.
