Castelnuovo Berardenga is placed in the extreme south of the Chianti area, in the Ombrone valley, near Siena. Originally all the area was under the possessions of the Ugurgeri della Berardenga and the castle was built by Siena as a stronghold for enemies. In 1511 the Castle was given to Belisario Bulgarini and then to Bellormanti family. Then it was incorporated under the possessions of Cosimo I, the first Grand Duke of Tuscany. After Siena defeat, in 1555, the defensive structures were mostly destroyed. Chigi-Saracini Palace represents the ancient central core of the primitive defensive design. It is a stately building surrounded by a marvellous park and situated on a hill-top overhanging the town.
